Image of The Week: Vietnam – The Old Smiling Man of Hoi Ann

This weeks image is another captured in the UNESCO listed town of Hoi Ann in Vietnam. I met this old fella along the river front one afternoon whilst going for a stroll with the camera. The first thing I noticed (how could you miss them) was his beaming set of false teeth. I can’t speak a zac of Vietnamese, and he couln’t speak a word of English, but I managed to work out that he wanted to take me out in his little row boat.

I settled on a price and off we went, rowing around the river front of Hoi Ann. I was a little woried at the time as his boat was in quite bad condition, and I had vissions of swiming back with my camera in hand. Everytime I look at this photo, I can’t help but smile.

This weeks image is another captured in Hong Kong during a brief stopover over just after this past new years period. Hong Kong is one of my most favorite cities in the world. This was my second visit, and I can guarantee it won’t be my last. The Chaos that unfolds before you each and every day, makes for great photo opportunities. This image was captured in Kowloon, my favorite part of Hong Kong, and is not far from the suburb that has been described as the most densely populated square mile on the planet.

Image of The Week: New Caledonia – Afternoon Sun On An Old Stone Building

This weeks image is another captured in New Caledonia a couple of years ago, during our camping tour of Grande Terre. We were cruising around some out of the way back roads looking for a secluded beach spot to have lunch when I noticed this old stone building. I made mention to Liza, that I wanted to stop on the way back, as the light we be perfect. As it turned out a few dark clouds started to roll in, that made for an even better backdrop to the image.

Image of The Week: Cambodia – Balancing Boy on Lake Tonle Sap

This weeks image is another captured at Lake Tonle Sap, during my time in Cambodia a few years ago. I spotted this young boy standing on the front of a passing boat, and his posture and stance were incredibly still and upright. Although the boat was moving quite slowly, I was running quickly along side it, so I could capture him side on with the lush green background.

Image of The Week: A Lone Russian Guard Walking Through a Kremlin Blizzard

This weeks image was captured in Moscow back in April of 2007. It shows a lone Presidential Guard walking through a blizzard, within the grounds of the Kremlin. The Presidential Guard or Kremlin Regiment, are a special military unit given the sole purpose of defending the Kremlin, as well as the highest state officials. On this particular day, the weather wasn’t looking all that bad mid morning, so we arranged our visit. By lunchtime the snows were drifting in hard and fast, and at times it seemed as if we were the only ones there.

Image of The Week: Women of Madagascar Sewing The Rice Terraces

This weeks image was captured in Madagascar during my time in the country late last year. On arrival I had no idea that the Madagascan countryside would be covered in rice paddies and terraces. Even with its close proximity to mainland Africa (Madagascar is considered part of the African continent) the inhabitants and the culture of the country is more closely related to Asia than Africa.

Whilst trying to get a little closer to this group of women working in the fields, I was caught peering through the trees with my camera. In situations like these, it’s always your best bet to smile, and have a bit of a laugh. It wasn’t long until I had the whole group in hysterics and laughing with me.

Image of The Week: Floating Village of Chong Kneas – Lake Tonle Sap Cambodia

This weeks image was captured at the floating village of Chong Kneas that is situated at the Northern end of Cambodia’s Lake Tonle Sap. It would no doubt be a hard life for most of the people living here, although there were quite a few very respectable houses throughout the village. Most of the people living within the floating village are refugees from neighboring Vietnam, and sadly were looked down upon by some of the local Cambodia’s I talked to in Siem Reap.

The village of Chong Kneas is only a short moto ride away from Siem Reap, and makes for an easy half day trip if you need a break from the temples of Angkor. You won’t have any issues in organizing a boat to take you for a quick cruise around the area.

Image of The Week: Moscow’s St Basil’s Cathedral and The Walls of The Kremlin

This weeks image was captured on cold and snowy day in April 2007. It was many years since I first visited Russia back in 1994. I noticed considerable changes to the country during the second visit, but the one thing that stood out most, was the cost of traveling there. Moscow has now become incredibly expensive, and is ranked among the most expensive cities in the world.

The image captures many of Moscow’s most famous land marks. St Basil’s Cathedral on the left hand side, and the towers that line the impenetrable walls of the Kremlin on the right. Last but not least is Lenin’s tomb in the center of the image, being guarded by a lonely Russian police officer.

Image of The Week: Cloud Gate Sculpture of Chicago’s Millennium Park

This weeks image was captured at Chicago’s Millennium Park and shows the stainless steel mirrored cloud gate sculpture with a backdrop of Chicago’s famed skyscrapers. The cloud gate was a photographers dream, with many different shooting angles, that gave off all kinds of different reflections of the surrounding buildings.

The cloud gate was designed by Indian born British artist Anish Kapoor, and was inspired by liquid mercury. The sculpture has also won many design awards. I captured the image back in December 2004, and I’m actually quite proud of this one. I didn’t have the SLR with me, and this image was taken with a small pocket camera that what would now be valued at less than $100.

Image of The Week: A Cargo Ship on The Frozen Gulf of Bothnia – Finland

This weeks image was captured in 2007 whilst I was aboard an ‘Ice Breaker‘ in the ‘Gulf of Bothnia’ , just off shore from the industrial hub, and port town of Kemi. The gulf usually begins to freeze around November, and does not completely thaw out until some time in April on most years. Complete freezing of the gulf does not occur until the month of January.

This image was taken in early March, when the gulf was completely frozen over, with the approximate thickness of the ice about 40cm. In extremely harsh winters the Gulf of Bothnia can be frozen with an ice thickness of up to 85cm. This poses quite a task for the ice breakers carving the paths for the ships to ferry cargo as pictured below.
